Subject: [Usenet RKT] The INN 1.7 release
Priority: normal
....The Internet Software Consortium RELEASES a "production stable" INN....
Nearly two months after 1.5.1corr from Mib Software was ready, the ISC finally has a release I consider "production stable." The reason that I consider it "production stable" is that the ISC has re-released 1.5.1corr, and is calling it INN 1.7.
(This was done with my permission and my cooperation.)
I recommend eventually switching to 1.7 to get the benefit of a a few "late-breaking" additions by the ISC. (They are detailed below my signature.) Switching will also ensure 100% compatibility for any patches developed for 1.7. (Most patches for 1.5.1 will also work as well as they did for 1.5.1corr....)
If you have followed my RKT announcements, there is no critical, immediate need to switch to 1.7 from 1.5.1corr: they are essentially the same. This means you can make the switch at your leisure. Use the same config.data without changes. All file formats are completely compatible.
These Usenet RKT subscriber's messages will continue for as long as there are still fixes and developments to report. (That should be a while.) A major effort towards INN 1.8 is underway, (1.5.1corr has already been merged into it.) I continue to monitor news.software.nntp, inn-workers, inn-bugs, inn-patches, and BUGTRAQ to summarize and forward items of essential interest. You don't have to read through hundreds of messages of flames and fluff every week.
I won't always be two months ahead of the ISC, but I will keep you informed.

Differences between INN 1.7 and 1.5.1corr.
1. The Chris Caputo's long-newgroup patch to cc.c (October)
This was the subject of a recent Usenet RKT announcement,
which included a slightly different patch from Mib Software.
2. Clayton O'Neill (et al) channel input buffer reduction patch.
chan.c (October)
3. Minor posting permission fix. (October 1)
"Bettina Fink <laura@krell.snafu.de> pointed out a bug this afternoon
on the German newsadmin mailinglist: If a reader connects, which has
only access to a subset of a server's newsgroups, he can send articles
to the moderators of moderated groups which aren't within his access
pattern."
4. Fix of spurious CR (^M) characters inserted in 1.5.1corr accidentally
in some places. (This is an embarrassing problem which was caused
by some experimental tools I developed.) The code generated is exactly the
same with or without the ^M, but it does cause diff -r to report it. When the
^M's are removed, the differences in the code between 1.7 and 1.5.1corr are
just the three above patches -- that's it.
5. Changes to CONTRIBUTORS, README, VERSION, etc.
6. A one-line change to sample-configs/config.data for AIX.
INN 1.7 has some "prepackaged" upgrades from 1.5.1
7. The INN-FAQ is from 4/22/1997. (The Usenet RKT has a more up to date copy, and is
updated periodically.)
8. The updated parsecontrol (Security.05 from April 97) (This eliminates the need
to apply a separate patch.)
9. The updated contrib/innreport.pl from Fabien Tassin. Major improvements!
10. control.ctl is not the most up to date version (pointed out by e marshall to
inn-workers 10/17.)
