Why doesn't the news reader show all articles?
News readers provide a way to view the list of the articles available in a particular group. But some groups can receive 1000 or more messages a day! And even most groups of active interest can receive 20 or so messages per day.
Since many news servers keep articles for a week or more in most groups before removing them, there may hundreds to thousands of articles available for reading!
In order to help you cope with such a large number of articles, most news readers have options in presenting the article list to the user. Often, articles are hidden from view, in an attempt to show only those articles you are interested in reading.
Common Article view options
- Hide the articles you have already read.
- Hide the articles which you had a chance to read before.
(This behavior is often called "Show new articles only")
- Hide the articles with a certain subject, or certain author ("Kill files")
- Show the list sorted by subject threads.
- List information on only the most recent 100, or 200, or 300 (etc) articles out of the
hundreds or thousands available.
Usually all of these options can be adjusted by the user. Consult the documentation for your news reader.
