Should you Upgrade INN?
See advice on switching to INN 2.x at RKT for INN 2.x
Upgrading to INN 1.7.2
- If you are running 1.5.1, 1.5.1sec, 1.5.1sec2, etc +patches
then you will probably save yourself time and get a lot of benefit in stability by switching to 1.7.2.
There are additional defects which were reported after 1.7.2 was released. See:
INN 1.7.2 Software Action Items
If you have local patches against 1.5.1, they will most likely still work in 1.7.2
Your old config.data is completely compatible to 1.5.1 (With one exception: HAVE_SETBUFFER, reported by Charles Dennet to news.software.nntp 10/17/97)
DO NOT use the sample-configs/config.data from INN 1.7.2!
Save yourself time and trouble by re-using your config.data from INN 1.5.1. Most of the sample-configs in 1.7.2 are corrupt. If you are not already running 1.5.1, see replacement sample-configs at: http://www.mibsoftware.com/userkt/inn/sample-configs/
On the other hand, if you are going to use an existing config.data from 1.5.1, you may need to make a change to the HAVE_SETBUFFER item. See Charles Dennet to news.software.nntp 10/17/97
- If you are running 1.6b3 + patches, and you are happy with 1.6b3, then you can continue.
There are features in 1.6b3 that are not available in other versions. The additional features in 1.6 are described in my message to inn-workers:
http://www.mibsoftware.com/userkt/inn/dev/inn-workers/vol9709/xcb.htm
Most of these features are available as third-party patches to 1.5.1 (and should work with little trouble in 1.7.)
http://www.mibsoftware.com/0022.htm
IMPORTANT: There are defects reported since 1.6b3 was released. See the INN Patches page which lists
defects for that version.
NOTE: If you are not already running 1.6b3, then I recommend 1.7.2 instead.
- If you are running 1.4xxxx,
and are happy with it, then you have probably been ignoring all of this version multiplication. Carry on. But 1.7.2 answers most of the confusion of versions.
