Background
Most settings of INN are configured at compile time. (For this reason, installing a pre-compiled binary of INN is not recommended.)

All compile-time settings for INN are determined by the file:
config/config.data

This file is generally obtained in one of three methods:
INN 1.8 is in development, and it will have a new, automated method of configuration.

Note: If you run make without creating a config/config.data, you will get a default version, which will only be successful on BSD/OS.

Don't use the sample-configs from INN 1.7.2!
Many sample-configs shipped in INN 1.7.2 and config.dist are incorrect.

The sample-configs from 1.5.1 will work in 1.7.2 (I made the majority of
the changes to create 1.7.2 from 1.5.1, and I can state that NO
changes were required.) The sample configs from 1.5.1 appear below.

Use the file which most closely matches your O/S.

These should work for 1.5.1, 1.7, 1.7.1, 1.7.2. (Not 1.6)

As an alternative to using a known good sample config, you can start with the base config.dist (not the one from 1.7.2!) and use INN FAQ part 9, or your own knowledge to set entries.

To compile with these files, they must be named config.data and be in the config subdirectory when running INN make. IMPORTANT: touch the config.data and always run make clean to ensure the make works correctly.
