"Know what you are trying to improve"
Observation #1: Like most systems, news is system of processes carried out by two classes of processors, which will both be impacted by any change:
- The software/hardware
- The humans
Observation #2: Systems have three traditional improvements: "Better, Faster, Cheaper"
The 6 categories of improvements to news
The software/hardware improvements
- 1. Additional Features (search capability, filtering, etc.)
- 2. Faster (increased throughput, decreased delays, run-times of expire, etc)
- 3. Cheaper (Less Memory overhead, CPU time, disk storage space, network bandwidth)
Improvements to benefit the humans:
- 4. Additional Features (additional capabilities/tools to allocate resources, logging/error reporting for better understanding, etc)
- 5. Less time (Faster server response time, other time savings for users/admins)
- 6. Less frequent intervention (Fewer events requiring intervention, better error and condition monitoring, less costly software/patches etc.)
